PlayStation has confirmed to Eurogamer that it will once again not be attending Gamescom this year.
This annual German event is the most attended gaming convention in the world, and an important date in the gaming calendar – an opportunity for developers and publishers to showcase their products.
However, Sony has abandoned the event in recent years, favouring its own dedicated PlayStation showcase, and this trend looks set to continue in 2024. In a statement shared with Eurogamer, a Sony spokesperson said: “At the moment we have no plans to exhibit at Gamescom 2024.”
Sony showcased its upcoming PlayStation slate in the State of Play broadcast last month, which included a remake of Silent Hill 2, the 5v5 sci-fi shooter Concorde, and a new Astro Bot title called Astro Bot. Our Chris recently spoke with Nicolas Doucet, founder of Team Asobi Studio and creative director of Astro Bot, about the release, which is set to launch on PS5 this September.
As for Gamescom, PlayStation isn't the only company that won't be present during the August conference. In April, Nintendo also confirmed it would skip the show.
“Gamescom is a great event and each year we evaluate whether Nintendo should attend,” a Nintendo UK spokesperson told Eurogamer. “After careful consideration from all angles, we have decided not to attend Gamescom 2024. Players will have opportunities to try out Nintendo Switch games at other events throughout the year.”
However, Xbox has confirmed that it will be there. In a social media post, the Xbox team said that conference attendees will be able to visit its “largest booth ever.”
