New Delhi: Amid India’s diplomatic row with Canada, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar On Tuesday, it asked UN member states not to allow “political convenience” to dictate responses to “terrorism, extremism and violence”.
Jaishankar, who was addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, said respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs cannot be a “cherry-picking exercise”.

“When reality deviates from rhetoric, we must have the courage to call it out,” the Union minister said.

The strong comments came against the backdrop of ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations that Indian agents were involved in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist on their country’s soil.

India has dismissed the allegations as “ridiculous” and has asked Canada not to take action against Khalistani extremists operating from its soil.
During his address, Jaishankar said that the days are over when only a few nations set the agenda and expected others to fall in line.
He also spoke about global inclusiveness, recalling how the African Union was made a permanent member of the G20 on India’s initiative, a move that “gave a voice to an entire continent”.
“The inclusion of the African Union in the G20 should encourage the UN to modernize the Security Council as well,” Jaishankar said, indirectly referring to India’s bid to become a permanent member of the UNSC. He said.
During his speech, Jaishankar also said that the world must never allow an injustice like vaccine racism to happen again.
“Climate action also cannot continue to witness the evasion of historic responsibilities. The power of markets must not be used to shift food and energy from the needy to the rich.” They said.
