Protesters storm a supermarket owned by a Kenyan lawmaker who voted in favor of a tax hike.


On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, a group of protesters in Nyeri stormed Kenyan MP Njoroge Wainaina's supermarket after he voted in favor of the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

In a video shared online, protesters were seen storming a Chinese supermarket, looting various items including household goods and food items. The angry mob also vandalized property, destroyed furniture and threw stones at the windows of the supermarket before setting it on fire.

Anti-riot police officers rushed to the spot to disperse the crowd and control the chaos. Firefighters soon joined efforts to extinguish the flames.

The protests, initially concentrated in Nyeri, have spread to other parts of the country including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kericho and Eldoret, indicating widespread dissatisfaction with the Finance Bill 2024.
