Rahul Gandhi, MK Stalin react to the killing of Mayawati's aide in Chennai

K Armstrong was hacked to death by bikers near his home on Friday.

Eight people have been arrested in connection with the murder of the Bahujan Samaj Party's Tamil Nadu chief in Chennai, police said on Saturday. K Armstrong was hacked to death by bikers near his home on Friday.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said he had ordered the police to “expeditiously” investigate the “shocking” murder.

“The killing of Bahujan Samaj Party State President Armstrong is tragic and deeply saddened. The police arrested those involved in the killing overnight. My deepest condolences and condolences to Armstrong's party, family, relatives and bereaved friends. Want to do and am saddened. Have ordered the police officers to speed up the case and bring the culprits to justice as per the law,” he wrote in a post on X.

On Friday, BSP chief Mayawati said the killing was “tragic” and demanded that the state “punish the culprits”.

In a post on X, he called Armstrong a “strong voice” for Dalits. The gruesome killing of Tamil Nadu State Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) President Mr. K. Armstrong outside his house in Chennai is extremely sad and condemnable. A lawyer by profession, he was known as a strong Dalit voice in the state. The state government should punish the culprits,” he wrote.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said the killing was “brutal and heinous”. “Deeply shocked by the brutal and heinous killing of Bahujan Samaj Party Tamil Nadu President Thiru Armstrong. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and followers. Tamil Nadu Congress leaders are in constant touch with the Tamil Nadu Government. “And I am sure that the government will ensure that the culprits are brought to justice at the earliest,” he said.

Tamil Nadu's opposition criticized the ruling DMK for the brazen attack, saying the killing was a testament to the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. What should I say when the state head of a national party is killed? Law and Order is embarrassing. There is no fear of the law or the police,” said Leader of Opposition Edappadi Palaniswami.

Preliminary investigation suggests that it was a revenge killing linked to the murder of a gangster, Arcot Suresh, last year. Sources say that the accused in the murder include Suresh's close relatives and colleagues.

Some reports said the attackers posed as food delivery agents, but police have yet to confirm this.

A lawyer, Armstrong was elected to the Chennai Corporation Council in 2006. He rose to fame in 2008 after organizing a mega rally in Chennai with BSP chief Mayawati. He was acquitted by the courts.

Police has formed ten special teams under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police Asra Garg. “We are enquiring. In a few hours, we will tell what the real motive is,” Mr. Garg told NDTV.
