Rajya Sabha by-elections: 12 leaders elected unopposed to upper house, NDA touches majority mark


The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) reached the majority mark in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. Nine BJP leaders and two alliance members He was elected unopposed in the upper house by-elections.

Senior Congress leader and advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi was also elected to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana, bringing the strength of the opposition India bloc to 85 in the upper house.

With today's by-election results, the BJP's strength in the Rajya Sabha has gone up to 96, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) now has 112 seats.

There are currently eight vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha, four from Jammu and Kashmir and four for nominated members, bringing the majority to 119 in the 245-member House.

The majority mark in the Rajya Sabha, which the NDA has been striving for for a decade, for the passage of key bills by Biju Janata Dal (BJD), YSR Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and A. It will reduce dependence on parties like IADMK.

On the other hand, the Congress will retain the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, increasing its number of members to 27, two more than the 25 seats required for the post.
