Rashid Khan was the hero as Afghanistan beat Bangladesh in the Super 8s to reach the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, but one incident showed that even the best players have bad moments. Batting first in a tense game, Rashid Khan came out to bat with his team struggling at 93-5, with only 14 balls left in the innings. So, when Afghanistan failed to convert a single run into two, Rashid lashed out at teammate Karim Janat, and angrily threw his bat towards him.
This incident happened on the third ball of the last over (19.3) of Afghanistan's innings. Rashid's shot went towards the cover region. Rashid thought a second shot was also possible, but Janat sent the ball back from the middle of the pitch.
The Afghanistan captain became furious and instantly expressed his displeasure by throwing his bat towards Janat and then returned to the crease.
Rashid's anger is understandable, as the Afghanistan captain had hit two sixes before the incident, and was eager to get back on strike. Luckily, Rashid regained strike a ball later, and ended Afghanistan's innings with a third six.
Rashid's 19-run knock off just 10 balls helped Afghanistan post a score of 115 runs, ensuring their place in the semi-finals.
Afghanistan needed a win to enter their first semifinal of a major ICC tournament. Bangladesh were cruising towards victory but Rashid changed the game with the ball.
Rashid derailed Bangladesh's run chase by taking the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh wickets. Afghanistan eventually won by 8 runs (as per DLS method) as Bangladesh were bowled out for 105.
Afghanistan will take on South Africa in the first semi-final at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad on June 27. If they win, they will face either India or England in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
