Rohit Sharma reacts to PM Modi's 'living example of excellence' post for Indian captain: 'Proud to bring the World Cup home'


Team India's World Cup win on Caribbean soil was a dream come true for a billion Indian fans. Captain Rohit Sharma, who led India to their second World Cup triumph in the shortest format, on Saturday ended the long wait for an ICC title at the 2024 World Cup. The Virat Kohli-led Team India defeated South Africa by seven runs in the final at Kensington Oval. After India lifted the famous trophy in Barbados, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Indian cricket team over the phone.

While congratulating the members on the historic T20 World Cup win, PM Modi also shared a special message for outgoing Indian captain Rohit. Rohit, 37, announced his retirement after the T20 World Cup final. Joining the retirement club with Kohli, Rohit told reporters that the ICC World Cup final was his last appearance for Team India in the shortest format of the game. Rohit will continue to lead India in Test and One Day International (ODI) formats.

PM Modi said, “Dear @ImRo45, you are an epitome of excellence. Your aggressive mindset, batting and captaincy have given a new dimension to the Indian team. Your T20 career will always be remembered. It was a pleasure speaking to you this morning.” Replying to PM Modi on X, popularly known as Twitter, ace cricketer Rohit thanked the Indian Prime Minister for his kind words.

Rohit said, “Narendra Modi Sir, thank you so much for your kind words. The team and I are so proud to be able to bring the cup home and we are truly overwhelmed by how much joy it has brought to everyone.” Rohit also posted a picture of himself lying on his back with his eyes closed after winning the World Cup for the Men in Blue. “This picture symbolises how I am feeling right now. Right now I am enjoying a dream come true for a billion people,” Rohit said.

Six Indians in ICC Team of the Tournament

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the prize money. Rohit and company received Rs 125 crore after India's title win in the T20 World Cup. India became the first men's team to win the T20 World Cup without losing a single match. The ICC selected six members of the Indian team for the best team of the tournament. ICC's T20 World Cup XI includes captain Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.
