Rupert Murdoch resigns as chairman of Fox and News Corp

Rupert Murdoch is stepping down as chairman of the boards of both Fox Corp and News Corp, the companies said on Thursday.

The move will become official in November. Murdoch, 92, will be appointed honorary chairman of each company. Lachlan Murdoch, one of his sons, will become sole chairman of News Corp and will remain as executive chairman and CEO of Fox Corp.

“Our companies are in good health, as is mine,” the senior Murdoch said in a note to staff. “We have every reason to be optimistic about the years to come – I certainly am, and plan to be here to participate in them. But the fight for freedom of expression and, ultimately, freedom of thought will never stop It hasn’t been this intense.”

Murdoch is stepping down from the board of Fox following a tumultuous year at the TV network, shortly after the company agreed to pay $787.5 million in a defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems over false claims that the company’s machines voted for President Joe Biden. Had influenced the 2020 election between Biden. And Donald Trump.

Fox News also saw top talent Tucker Carlson exit earlier this year, which led to a brief decline in ratings before he was replaced.

His move comes a year before the upcoming presidential elections in America. News Corp. owns the newspaper The Wall Street Journal, among other publications, while Fox is the parent company of the right-wing TV networks Fox News and Fox Business.

“Throughout my professional life, I have been connected to news and views on a daily basis and that will not change,” Murdoch said in his note to staff. He said that now the time has come for him to play different roles.

Dear friends,

I am writing to let you all know that I have decided to transition to the role of Chairman Emeritus at Fox & News. Throughout my professional life, I have been connected to news and opinions every day, and that won’t change. But the time is right for me to move on to different roles, knowing that we have really talented teams and a passionate, principled leader in Lachlan who will become the sole Chairman of both companies.

Neither excessive pride nor false humility are admirable qualities. But I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved collectively over the decades, and I’m deeply grateful to my colleagues, whose contributions to our success have sometimes gone unnoticed outside the company, but I appreciate them deeply. Appreciate. Whether it’s the truck drivers who deliver our papers, the cleaning staff who toil after we leave our offices, the assistants who support us or the skilled operators behind the cameras or computer code, without you we would be less successful and have less positive impact on society. Will put in dedication day by day.

Like me, our companies are also in a strong position. Our opportunities far outweigh our business challenges. We have every reason to be optimistic about the years to come – I certainly am, and plan to be here to participate in them. But the fight for freedom of expression and ultimately freedom of thought has never been more intense.

My father believed strongly in independence, and Lachlan is fully committed to this cause. Self-serving bureaucracies are trying to silence those who would question their origins and purpose. Elites have open contempt for those who are not members of their rarefied class. Most of the media is in cahoots with those elites, and is promoting political narratives rather than pursuing the truth.

In my new role, I can guarantee you that I will be engaged in a competition of ideas every day. Our companies are communities, and I will be an active member of our community. I will watch our broadcasts with a critical eye, read our newspapers and websites and books with great interest, and reach out to you with ideas, suggestions and advice. When I visit your countries and companies, you can expect to see me in the office on a Friday afternoon.

Wherever you work and whatever your responsibilities, I look forward to meeting you. And I urge you to take advantage of this great opportunity to improve the world we live in.

This is breaking news. Please check back for updates.
