S Jaishankar amid Canada row at UN

India told the United Nations on Tuesday evening that “political convenience” cannot be the basis for a response to terrorism or extremism, and asked the international community to respect the rules-based order and the UN Charter. Addressing the UN General Assembly, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also called out (without naming) nations that interfere in the internal affairs of others.

Mr Jaishankar’s remarks – coming amid an India-Canada diplomatic row and ongoing border tensions with Pakistan – have been interpreted as a subtle swipe at both countries. There were harsh words for Pakistan last week. India called on Islamabad to shut down its “terror infrastructure” and said matters related to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were its “internal affairs”.

“… nor should we recognize that political convenience determines the response to terrorism, extremism and violence. Likewise, respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs cannot be an exercise in cherry-picking.” When reality deviates from rhetoric, we must have the courage to call it out… Without real solidarity, there can never be real trust,” he said.

India and Canada have been locked in a diplomatic row since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week claimed that “Delhi agents” were involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Najjar.

Najjar – wanted by India on terrorism charges – was a Canadian citizen who was shot dead outside a gurudwara in British Columbia, Canada, in June. India has categorically denied Canada’s “ridiculous” allegations and pointed out that Mr Trudeau’s government has yet to share evidence to support its claim.

The Indian government has also flagged “politically motivated hate crimes and criminal violence” in Canada, home to a large and politically influential Sikh community, which could affect the outcome of the country’s next general election in 2025. Hope to play an important role.
