San Jose bakery business booms after Tesla cancels order – NBC Bay Area

There's a sweet ending to the saga that pitted a San Jose small business owner against a Silicon Valley giant.

Business is booming at The Giving Pies after the community learned the owner was left holding the bag after an order for 4,000 mini pies for Tesla was suddenly cancelled.

This past weekend, community members came out by the hundreds to support Black and women-owned small businesses.

“Oh my God, it's unbelievable,” said The Giving Pies owner Vohangi Raseterinera. “I'm shocked. I'm like, 'I didn't do this for her.' I'm so grateful. It's amazing. The people are amazing.”

More than 300 customers came to support the business on Friday and Saturday, and Raseterinera said they received donations from across the country and as far away as the Netherlands and Sweden.

Elon Musk personally posted that Tesla would make things right with the bakery, and Tesla has done so. Raseterinera said a Tesla manager offered to pay and reimburse her for $2,000 worth of supplies she had rushed to prepare for a previous order and gave her 3,600 mini pies for a Women's Day celebration in March. Offered a new catering job.

It's a job he had to turn down.

“Unfortunately, I can't do their catering program because with all the business we get, we're out of stock of crust, and then we also have pie day to prepare for, so there's no way,” she said with a laugh. “

Raseterinera said she is interested in working with Tesla in the future but wants to fill pre-existing orders.
