One more case of the mosquito-borne virus Zika has been reported in the city, taking the total number to seven, municipal officials said on Tuesday.

The latest case is of a 45-year-old woman from Dahanukar Colony in Kothrud.
According to municipal corporation officials, the woman complained of fever, joint pain and skin rashes on June 26, following which she went to a private hospital for treatment.
After an initial health check-up, doctors at the hospital suspected that he had Zika virus infection and sent his samples to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for testing. On Tuesday, NIV confirmed the Zika virus infection.
“The total number of cases has now gone up to seven and reports of some samples are awaited,” said Dr Rajesh Dighe, assistant health officer, PMC.
The PMC reported the first case of Zika on June 20 following which civic officials swung into action. Of the seven cases reported, two are pregnant women from the Erandwane area.
The Zika virus is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which is known to transmit infections such as dengue and chikungunya. Most people infected with Zika either remain asymptomatic (up to 80%) or show mild symptoms of fever, rash, conjunctivitis, body aches and joint pain. In pregnant women, the Zika virus can cause congenital microcephaly, Guillain-Barré syndrome and other neurological complications. The infection can also cause health problems such as eye problems, hearing loss and seizures in newborns.
