'Shogun' becomes first non-English language winner of Best Drama Emmy

FX's historical drama “Shogun” was already on a high with record-breaking wins from its opening week when the Emmy Awards rolled around Sunday at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

Last weekend, “Shogun” swept the Creative Arts Emmys, making history by winning 14 awards and setting the record for the most Emmys won by a show in a single year. The previous record was held by “Game of Thrones,” which won 12 in 2015.

Daniel Levy, who co-hosted Sunday night's show with his father Eugene, noted the accomplishment during the opening segment, saying, “We haven't even given out a single award tonight, and yet 'Shogun' has already made Emmy history.” As the night progressed, “Shogun” won four more awards: Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, respectively; Frederick E.O. Toye for directing; and Outstanding Drama Series.
