GLENDALE, Ariz. – Last week, Shohei Ohtani said he was “very confident” he would be ready when the Dodgers open their season against the Padres on March 20 in Seoul, South Korea.
On Monday, the newest Dodgers superstar took an important step toward being able to accomplish that goal. For the first time since undergoing a second major right elbow surgery that shortened his 2023 season, Ohtani took batting practice on the field at Camelback Ranch.
“Overall I felt really good,” Ohtani said through interpreter Ippei Mizuhara. “Each swing went really strong with some good results.”
Ohtani, who has received praise from his teammates and officials for how cautious he is with every swing, took pitches from JT Watkins as he simulated an actual at-bat. In the first inning, Ohtani easily cleared the right field fence on his second swing of the season. In total, the two-time American League Most Valuable Player went through two rounds of batting practice. He took 21 swings overall, 10 of which were homers.
“As I said before, I was planning on swinging to the lighter side,” Ohtani said. “But I felt like the swings felt really good, which is a really good sign. I think it's getting me ready to go for Opening Day.”
In addition to the elbow ailment, Ohtani also suffered a left oblique injury, which sidelined him for the last month of the season. Hitting the field on Monday indicated to Ohtani that the specific injury is behind him, another encouraging sign in his progress.
“I was being a little cautious,” Ohtani said. “But overall I felt really good. All the swings I took inside the cage felt really sturdy. “I think we’re past the oblique injury.”
The next step in Ohtani's rehabilitation is unclear, but he has said on multiple occasions that he is on track for Opening Day. The Dodgers will begin taking live batting practice Tuesday, but it's unlikely Ohtani will participate in the next few days.
When Ohtani was asked if he would take the field every day, he said, “It won't be every day, but it will be more often during the season.” “I'll do most of my hitting in the cage. When there are things I need to check on, that's when I'll strike out.
Ohtani's first batting practice session outside was as impressive as it sounds. Most players don't hit a ton of home runs during those seasons, especially early in the spring. One of the most impressive changeups came when he launched a homer over the wall in right-center field.
After the ball fell into the bushes, Dodgers hitting coach Robert Van Scoyck asked Ohtani if he was jammed on the pitch. Ohtani turned back with a smile and immediately replied, “A little.”
“On the field, he looks great. He looks amazing,” Van Scoyck said. “He's moving well. He's moving fast. The ball is really coming. He's explosive. So from everything I've seen, he looks excellent.”
