Despite losing both openers on low scores, Sri Lanka got off to a good start with Kusal Mendis punishing only sixes and the fast bowlers. He scored a counter-attacking half-century in just 25 balls and when he was batting, it looked like he would make the match. However, after building a good partnership with Sadira Samarawickrama, both of them were out in quick succession and had to rebuild. After that, Charith Asalanka stepped up and scored 79 runs in 65 balls, but due to lack of required pace and no real support from the other end, he too was out. The Lankan batsmen could not take advantage of the opportunities given by their opponents. Nevertheless, their captain showed more fight in the end and recorded another brilliant half-century, while Kasun Rajitha also played a quick cameo. However, this only managed to cross the 300-run mark and the gap narrowed, but in the end, they still fell behind by 102 runs.
