Speed up work on Ghazipur landfill: Kejriwal

New Delhi: Unhappy with the pace of disposal of legacy waste Ghazipur LandfillChief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to rope in two more private companies to ensure that the deadline to level the “garbage mountain” is met.
During his visit to the landfill, Kejriwal observed that only 5.3 lakh metric tonnes of waste could be disposed of against the target of 1.5 lakh metric tonnes. “This is a joint venture of three companies and they have not been on the same page since the beginning of the work. We are hiring two more agencies parallel to the existing companies to speed up the progress,” he said.
The Chief Minister, however, added that the MCD would need the approval of the Standing Committee to award such a huge project to a private company. Since the issue of voting rights of the elderly is in the Supreme Court, the standing committee is yet to be formed. He said that once the court pronounces its verdict, a standing committee will be formed and two private agencies will be hired to speed up the work. “Until then, we will also decide whether to stick with the existing three agencies that are hostile to each other and hindering progress,” he added.
In the past few days, Kejriwal also visited Bhilswa and Okhla landfills to review the progress there. Although the pace in Bhalswa is faster than the target, about 65-70 lakh tonnes of waste is still left and we need an additional agency, he said, adding that work in Okhla is slow and it also needs another agency.
Delhi BJP spokesperson Parveen Shankar Kapur said AAP leaders, including the mayor, had no administrative experience, which is why they failed to supervise the work and progress was slow.
“It is surprising to see the CM pleading that he cannot hire a new agency because the MCD standing committee does not exist. It is your political fear that is not allowing the formation of the committee. “Constituted by giving voting rights to elders,” Kapoor said.
