Srinagar poll records historic voter turnout, PM Modi says 'Repeal of Art 370 enabled people's aspirations'

Srinagar polling center recorded a record 36.58 percent voter turnout till 8 pm on Monday, a historic high for which Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha congratulated the people of the parliamentary constituency and all stakeholders.

“Voters in Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Pulwama and Shopian showed confidence and enthusiasm in the electoral process to vote in record numbers,” the Election Commission of India (ECI) said in a press note. It was the first general election in the Valley after the abrogation of Article 370 and the implementation of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019. The ECI added that 24 candidates are in the fray as against 12 in the 2019 general elections.

“I would especially like to commend the people of Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency for the encouraging turnout, which is better than ever. The abrogation of Article 370 has enabled the talents and aspirations of the people to find full expression. Happening at the grassroots level, it's great for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, especially the youth,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X.

'It's heartwarming'


In a post on X, the Lt. Governor said: “Today, people came out in large numbers to vote in Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency and reaffirmed their faith in democracy and the Constitution. I want free, fair, peaceful and smooth polling.” Appreciate the hard work of all stakeholders for the organization.”

Srinagar Returning Officer Bilal Mohiuddin Bhat said there was no report of zero voting from 2,135 polling stations in the constituency. Notably, zero turnout was recorded at several polling stations in the past. “It is heartening to see a huge increase in voting percentage in the biggest festival of democracy. I truly appreciate the enthusiasm of the voters and look forward to witnessing a historic turnout in the next two phases. I am most I appeal to them to vote fearlessly and vote with responsibility and pride,” Lt Governor Sinha said.
