Standardizing waste management in Gurugram

India's 'Millennium City' – Gurugram has seen phenomenal population growth over the past decade since a wave of 'corporatisation' hit the erstwhile agricultural city. And with this increase in population comes a corresponding increase in waste generation. According to data from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), Gurugram generates 800 tonnes of garbage every day. MCG has played an active and effective role in keeping the city clean and managing the waste piles generated due to the well-defined and sophisticated processes devised by MCG.

Household waste collection: The waste Collection is done from every house through door to door service through third party agencies. However, recently the MCG has proposed to have complete control over waste collection. It will introduce user charges in property tax bills or include banks in respective wards to collect the charge. In addition, MCG is planning to finance the purchase of electric vehicles for unemployed youth and rag-packers, which can be used for waste collection.

Waste Processing: MCG operates five composting plants that convert wet waste into compost. Additionally, several composting facilities have been transferred to Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs), which are now managed by local communities. Many private colonies and societies have adopted source separation and composting as best practices. Includes basic composting methods used throughout the city.

Disposal: As of now, dry waste is dumped in Bandhwari Landfill. But to address this critical issue, the MCG has formed a special committee that is working on a number of measures – long-term and short-term, that can help reduce landfill waste. Also, the 'Integrated Solid Waste Management Project' is being implemented which will convert waste into energy by 2024 to extract the best.

The MCG is relentless in its efforts to keep the Millennium City spotless. They are not only trying to clean and process the waste generated but also looking for the root cause of waste generation. The Corporation has recently identified more than 3,000 Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) across the city in commercial and institutional categories.

Despite this precision in planning and execution, the city needs help in maintaining sanitation and waste management. The MCG is relentless in its efforts to keep the Millennium City spotless. Recently, it has been found that waste from Delhi is transported at odd hours, adding to the already heavy load. Waste management Although the Gurugram Municipal Corporation has fined at least 20 vehicles for this offence, the problem persists.

Strict legislative rules have been made under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 for proper disposal of waste. This includes segregation of wet, dry and household hazardous waste and proper disposal. Apart from this, MCG has set up a registration portal and panelized expert agencies to help in waste disposal. Penalties are imposed in case of non-compliance and strict action is taken against defaulters.
