Sushil Modi: A reluctant politician who was Nitish Kumar's most trusted friend.

Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi passed away. Monday after a long battle with cancer. Known as the man who discovered Bihar for the BJP, Modi served as Deputy Chief Minister for 11 years under Nitish Kumar and the two struck up an interesting friendship.

A seasoned politician with over three decades of experience, Sushil Modi has held various positions, including MLA, MLC, Member of Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha MP. He served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar twice – from 2005 to 2013 and from 2017 to 2020.

Sushil Modi's political journey began during his student days at Patna University, where he became the general secretary of its student union in 1973. He made his first foray into politics in 1990 as an elected MLA from Patna Central Constituency and has since been appointed as the Chief Whip of the BJP Legislature Party.

From 1996 to 2004, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly. In 2004, he joined the Lok Sabha as a representative from Bhagalpur. Modi was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2020 and retired earlier this year.

A reluctant politician

Despite spending decades in politics, Sushil Modi was initially reluctant to enter politics.

In 1973, before his graduation examination at Patna University, he gave up all socio-political activities despite being the general secretary of the students' union. Many expected him to fail as he was doing BSc (Hons) in Botany, a difficult subject for which he hardly attended classes. He came second in the entire university.

Sushil Modi, who was part of JP Narayan's Total Revolution Movement, got his chance to enter politics in 1977 when 55 young JP workers were elected as MLAs in Bihar. However, Modi preferred to stay with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and stay away from a political career.

Finally, it was Atal Bihari Vajpayee who managed to convince Modi to enter politics. Vajpayee attended Sushil Modi's wedding in 1987. Where he urged them to enter active politics.

In 1990, when the BJP fielded him from the Patna Central seat, a Congress stronghold, he defeated incumbent Congress MLA Aqeel Haider. He never looked back.

Link with Nitish Kumar

Sushil Modi's relationship with Nitish Kumar was important, with the two leaders working together for many years. In 2005, when the JD(U) and the BJP won the assembly elections, Nitish Kumar was named the Chief Minister. Then Lok Sabha member Sushil Modi quit his membership and became a member of the Bihar Legislative Council, after which he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister.

gave The two leaders had a very good relationship.Modi served as Deputy Chief Minister for about 11 years.

In 2020, when BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi was transferred to the Rajya Sabha, Nitish Kumar spoke his heart out about how much he would love to have him in his team.

“We have worked together for so many years. Everyone knows what I wanted (to have Modi in his team) but parties take their own decisions. Instead of Bihar, they move them to the Centre. We are happy for them and Nitish Kumar said.

In 2022, when Nitish Kumar broke ties with the BJP to join the grand coalition comprising the RJD, Congress and Left parties, he made a public statement announcing that if Sushil Modi became the deputy If there was a Chief Minister, this situation would not have arisen.

Despite Nitish Kumar's numerous political flops, his equation with Sushil Modi has never changed. In July 2017, when Nitish walked out of his alliance with the RJD and formed another government with the BJP, he once again made Modi his deputy.

Sushil Modi later told India Today, “It's like we were never separated.” “Our alliance is natural, our governance is in harmony and our way of working – deadline-driven and focused – complements each other.”
