Bangladesh will go to the 2023 World Cup without the best batsman in the country’s history as Tamim Iqbal has been ruled out of the 15-man squad due to a persistent back injury. ESPNcricinfo understands that Tamim informed the selectors a few days ago that they should take his back injury into account before selecting the final squad.

However BCB did not give any official explanation for this exclusion as they announced the squad on their social media platforms. They initially said that the squad would be announced at 5:45 pm, but the announcement was later delayed until after the third ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand. A few extra hours fueled speculation that a last-minute change might occur, but that did not happen.

Tamim scored 44 in the second ODI against New Zealand on 23 September, his first innings in international cricket since reversing his decision to retire in July. After this, he was removed from the job due to injury, due to which he had to miss the Asia Cup.

Tamim had said after the New Zealand match that he still has some problem in his back, for which the team physio is trying to help him get rid of it.

The medical team decided to rest Tamim along with several other players of the ODI team for the third match against New Zealand.

The rest of the players of the Bangladesh team are mostly predictable, with Shakib Al Hasan as the captain. Liton Das, his deputy, Tanjid Hasan will be his starting partner, while Nazmul Hossain Shanto will be the designated No. 3. Shakib, Tauheed Hridayoy and Mushfiqur Rahim will form the middle order, while Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan will be in the middle to lower order. Order batting options.

Mehdi Hasan, who batted at four positions in ODIs this year, will remain a Miraj floater. Mehdi is likely to open in some matches, but his main role has been at number 7.

The pace attack includes Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmood, Mustafizur Rahman and Tanzeem Hasan. Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed has found himself included in the World Cup squad after some impressive performances in the recent Asia Cup.

The squad includes four players from the U-19 World Cup-winning team from 2020: Hridoy, Shoriful, Tanzi and Tanzim.

His omission from the World Cup squad has almost confirmed that Tamim has played his last ODI for Bangladesh. He has had an illustrious career for Bangladesh, opening for them in all three formats between 2007 and 2020. He is their leading run-scorer in ODIs, and has led the current team to an automatic spot in the World Cup. But following injuries and allegations of unprofessionalism from BCB president Nazmul Hasan, Tamim retired from international cricket on 6 July.

The next day, the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked Tamim to reconsider his decision, to which he agreed, but then he needed a long break to recover from his back problem. Tamim stepped down from the captaincy in August, after which BCB appointed Shakib as ODI captain, giving him the responsibility for all three formats.
