The victorious Indian cricket team is stranded in Barbados after a Category 4 hurricane hit the Caribbean island of BRIDGETOWN, Barbados in the early hours of Monday, delaying the team's return home by at least a day.The Rohit Sharma-led side has been staying at a five-star hotel since its win over South Africa in the T20 World Cup final here on Saturday. As forecast, life-threatening winds and storm surge hit Barbados and neighbouring islands on Monday. The country of around 3 lakh population has been under lockdown since Sunday evening.

The main international airport has been closed until further notice and water and electricity supplies have also been disrupted.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who arrived here ahead of the big final, said, “Like you guys, we are also stuck here. Firstly, we have to see how to get the players and others out of here safely and then we will think about the honour when we reach India.”

The team, along with top BCCI officials including Jay Shah, was scheduled to leave for India via a charter flight on Monday, but this was not possible due to airport closures. The BCCI is also trying to evacuate the Indian media traveling from the cyclone-affected area.

“We were trying to get a charter flight for Monday but the airport is closed, so that option is out. We are in touch with several charter operators but it all depends on the airport operations. As per the current situation, no flight can land or take off,” he said.

“The plan is to fly directly to India and stop in the US or Europe for refuelling. We are in touch with the airport authorities. The airport is expected to remain closed till Tuesday afternoon. If the weather improves significantly, it may open earlier. The wind speed needs to reduce for flight operations to resume. You can't really fight nature. We have to wait and watch,” a source told PTI.
