The Ministry of Law and Justice today announced the appointment of Justice Shail Nago as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Shail Nago, Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, as the Chief Justice of the High Court. Punjab and Haryana from the date on which he will take charge of his post” said the notification.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has been without a regular Chief Justice since the retirement of Justice Ravi Shankar Jha in October 2023. At present, Justice GS Sindhavalia is the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court.
Justice Nagu was serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on 24 May 2024 after the resignation of Chief Justice Ravi Mallimath.
In December 2023, a collegium of the Supreme Court recommended Justice Shail Nago as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court after the retirement of Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha in October 2023. Since then the recommendation was pending for government approval.
Justice Nago was admitted as an advocate on 5 October 1987 and practiced civil and constitutional aspects as High Court of Madhya Pradesh at Jabalpur.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2011 and was later appointed as a Permanent Judge of the High Court.
