In his letter, written on September 26 and released by his office on Wednesday, Soren stressed that the preservation of the traditional religious existence of tribals is a serious concern, and that the ‘tribal/sarna religious code’ ‘ is being demanded so that the worshiper of the nature tribal community can be confident about his identity.

“Currently, when some organizations are demanding a uniform civil code, a constructive initiative on the tribal community’s demand for a Sarna Code is absolutely necessary for their protection,” he said.

It has been a long-standing demand of tribal groups to get Sarna Code as a separate religious code in the next census. On 11 November 2021, the Jharkhand Assembly unanimously passed a resolution for the ‘Sarna’ code.

On 25 May, Soren wrote to President Draupadi Murmu to help the state get central approval for a proposal to include the ‘Sarna Code’ as a separately recognized religious category.

Reiterating the demand to Modi in the letter, Soren said that the tribal population in the state has declined from 38 per cent to 26 per cent in the last eight decades. Soren said that the trend of decline in tribal population is worrisome as it will also affect the development policy of fifth and sixth schedule areas.

“You know that there are many groups in the tribal community who are on the verge of extinction, and if they are not protected on the principle of social justice, they will disappear along with the language and culture,” he said. Soren said in a letter to Modi,” Soren said.

Soren said that tribals had a separate religious column in the 1951 census but later it was removed from the list for unknown reasons. The JMM leader argued that a separate religious identity would help trace the original tribal population and preserve tribal culture and practices.
