The Congress central election committee on Saturday deliberated on the names of candidates for around 140 assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh and also decided that the party’s central election center would conduct a caste survey in the state.

“We have decided that conducting a caste census in Madhya Pradesh will be our main agenda,” Surjewala told reporters.

Elections to the 230-member assembly in Madhya Pradesh are likely to be held in November-December. The election schedule is yet to be announced.

In the 2018 assembly elections, the Congress won 114 seats, while the BJP won 109 seats.

However, the Congress government fell when many MLAs led by Jyotraditya Scindia, who later became Union Minister, joined the BJP.

The BJP returned to power in March 2020 with Shivraj Singh Chouhan as Chief Minister for a new term. BJP’s current strength in the assembly is 127.
