A couple has been arrested and handed over to the police over the ill-treatment of their five minor sons in Osumini Community, Nwe South Local Government Area of ​​Anambra State.

Mr. Oche and Mrs. Pace Mbono are accused of allegedly abusing children, starving and refusing to provide necessities for their five young boys.

The arrest was carried out by security operatives of the Naive South LGA before they were handed over to the police by the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.

This was disclosed in a statement by the media aide to Commissioner Chidima Akyanyano on Saturday, June 29.

“As to why they starved the children, the couple denied the allegation and said in their defense that the children always had a habit of eating raw rice, which made them angry,” the statement read.

“Apologising, the couple said they always feed the children but the children prefer to eat raw rice, which they don't know where they picked up this behaviour.

“On his part, the eldest of the children, Chigbo Mbono, disclosed that Peace Mbono is his father’s third wife, and since she came into his family, he has faced numerous hardships.

“Chigbo Mbuno, now 17, said he feeds once a day for days when his stepmother gives him food but after hunger he relies on raw rice and palm kernels. Do, they must have dealt with them a lot.

He went on to say that he, at some point, stopped going to school because he helped his father in his block industry. He noted that he makes four bags of cement on bad days and six bags of blocks on normal days.

“Further physical examination of the children by the Commissioner for Women revealed that they were very hungry and required medical attention.

“It is important to note that Mr Oche Mbonyo has been married to two wives before marrying his third, which was his sales girl, and that the children are the product of his previous marriages.

“According to the security personnel who helped nab the culprits, they explained that after the husband was found, his wife Pace fled to her maternal uncle's house in Navi before he caught her too.”

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Ify Obinabo, condemned the act and said the state government would ensure that child labour, abuse and all forms of abuse are reduced to the barest minimum. should be done

The couple has since been handed over to the police for further investigation, after which the matter will be taken up in court.
