THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a resolution urging the Center to officially change the name of the state to “Kerala”. The House was passing the resolution for the second time as the Union Home Ministry, which reviewed the first resolution, suggested some technical changes.
According to the resolution, the Assembly asked the Center to change the name of the state from “Kerala” to “Keralam” listed in the First Schedule of the Constitution. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan moved the resolution and it was accepted by both LDF and UDF members.
The assembly had earlier – in the ninth session of the 15th Legislative Assembly on August 9, 2023 – passed a similar resolution calling for changes to the First and Eighth Schedules of the Constitution. The Union Home Ministry had returned it saying that the change needed to be made only in the First Schedule.
