In a major move towards strengthening India's mineral conservation initiatives, Mines Secretary Shri VL Kantha Rao today inaugurated the registered office of Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL) at Sansad Marg, New Delhi. Senior officials of both Ministry of Mines and Kabul were present in this event.

KABIL, a joint venture company formed by NalcoHCL, and MECL, under the Ministry of Mines, are entrusted with the key mission of identification, exploration, acquisition and development of important and strategic mineral assets overseas.

During his inaugural address, Secretary Mines emphasized that the establishment of the Kabul office in Delhi marks a new era of joint efforts to ensure India's mineral security. An important milestone in KABIL's journey was the signing of the Exploration and Development Agreement with CAMYEN on 15 January 2024. The deal gave KABIL exclusive exploration rights to five lithium blocks in Argentina, a major step towards securing a stable supply of lithium, a key component in the production of batteries needed for various industries including electric vehicles.

Additionally, India's cooperation with Australia, the world's leading producer of lithium and cobalt, has been strengthened through Government-to-Government (G2G) and Business-to-Business (B2B) Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). Five lithium and cobalt projects have been selected, with feasibility studies currently underway.
