The progress of garbage removal at Ghazipur landfill is not satisfactory.

New Delhi: Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday visited the Gazipur landfill site and said the progress in clearing garbage from the massive dump was “unsatisfactory”.

Talking to reporters, Kejriwal said that he has proposed to hire two more agencies to speed up the work, which will come into operation after the approval of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. .

He said that in a joint venture, three companies have been entrusted with the task of processing waste at Gazipur landfill.

However, since they started working on the project, the three agencies have been fighting each other, the chief minister said, adding that progress on removing waste from the landfill was “not satisfactory at all”.

Kejriwal added, “Already there is a plan to hire another agency, so I have asked them to hire two agencies instead of one, so that the work can be expedited and we can do it as soon as possible.” The chief minister said that once the standing committee is set up and gives clearance to hire two new agencies, “we will think that the existing agencies are retained.” To go or not”.

“I have been told that the MCD has completed its paperwork till the approval of the standing committee,” he added.

The civic authorities had earlier said that the last date to flatten the Ghazipur landfill is December 2024.

In 2019, the height of Ghazipur Landfill was 65 meters which is only eight meters less than the height of Qutub Minar. In 2017, a portion of the Ghazipur landfill fell onto an adjacent road, killing two people. AAP had cleared three landfill sites from one of its poll plates ahead of the civic polls in December, which it won with a comfortable victory.

Kejriwal had visited the Okhla landfill site on Wednesday and said that processing and removal of waste from the large dump was progressing behind the expected target.

His visit to the Okhla landfill came days after he inspected work at the Bhalaswa landfill site on September 30.

There was a total of 45 lakh tonnes of waste in this mountain of garbage in Okhla. Kejriwal said on Wednesday that work to process and gradually remove it began last November, and the target was to remove 3 million tonnes by May 2024. But, the work is running slightly behind the expected target. Till date, about 1.8 lakh tonnes were to be removed, but 1.2 lakh tonnes have been removed.
