Multi-storey building collapses in Surat: Rescue workers worked through the night to remove huge concrete slabs.

Seven bodies were pulled from the rubble a day after a six-storey building collapsed during continuous rain in Surat, officials said on Sunday. A residential building with 30 apartments in Sachinpally village was built illegally and was mostly vacant. Only five flats were occupied and the residents paid a monthly rent of Rs 1,200.

Chief Fire Officer Basant Pareek told news agency ANI, “Search operations continued throughout the night. Seven bodies have been recovered.” The seventh body was recovered at 6 am, he said, adding that the rescue operation was over.

On Saturday, a woman was rescued from the rubble, while 15 others were injured when the building collapsed around 2.45 am, officials said.

Rescuers worked through the night to remove large slabs of concrete that had created a mountain of debris at the site. NDRF and SDRF workers are cutting concrete to reach the stranded residents.

The building, which was constructed in 2017, had five families living inside it when it collapsed. According to police, many residents were at work when the building collapsed, but many night shift workers were sleeping inside.

Locals said there was chaos after the sudden collapse on Saturday and they rushed to rescue someone buried under the debris. Officials said the building was only eight years old, with most of the flats vacant and dilapidated.

The commissioner said, “About five flats were occupied, most of them belonging to factory workers in the area. When the rescue operation started, we heard the screams of the trapped people. We found one from the debris. The woman was rescued and rushed to the hospital,” said the commissioner. Police, Surat, Anupam Gehlot.

Earlier, the senior police officer said that around 6-7 people are suspected to be buried under the debris and rescue operations are underway to extricate them. “We can hear their voices from inside the rubble,” he said. They will be rescued soon.
