Tinder scam: IAS candidate goes on a date, threatens to pay ₹ 1.2 lakh bill; What happened here?

A civil service aspirant was scammed by a tinder date, which cost him dearly. 1.2 lakh

According to an NDTV report, the victim had reached the Black Mirror Cafe in East Delhi's Vikas Marg to celebrate the birthday of a woman named Varsha, whom he matched on “Tinder”.

They ordered some snacks, two cakes and four shots of non-alcoholic drinks. The report said Varsha had to return home due to a sudden family emergency. Later, when the victim ate and received the bill, he was shocked at the amount. He had to pay. The report says that they will not have more than a few thousand rupees to spend on food worth 1,21,917.70.

When the victim questioned about the money, he was threatened and forced to hand over the money. Eventually he had to transfer the money to Akshay Pahwa, the owner of the online cafe. Pahwa is a 32-year-old resident of East Delhi's Shahdara and has studied up to class 10.

The victim filed a case the same day, and Pahua was taken into police custody.

Investigation revealed that Akshay Pahwa, Vinash Pahwa and Ansh Grover own the Black Mirror Cafe, which employs several “table managers”.

One of them is Aryan, a seventh grade dropout. After tracing Varsha, the police found that Aryan had contacted the victim posing as Varsha. He shared her picture through the One Time View feature and invited her to celebrate his birthday on June 23.

The whole group also planned for a family emergency. Each party involved in the scam is assigned its share. 15% is assigned to Varsha, 45% is split between table and cafe managers, and 40% is assigned to owners.

Such scams have become common in cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, among other major cities. Earlier this year, three men were sentenced to life in prison for murdering a 28-year-old businessman they met five years ago through Tinder.

Police told the publication that men generally avoid reporting such incidents because of the social stigma associated with dating apps.
