UAB Ascension to acquire St. Vincent Health System

UAB has 17 owned or affiliated hospitals in Alabama. “As part of our shared commitment to our patients, caregivers, colleagues and community, we have continued to discuss options to better fulfill our mission in an increasingly complex environment,” said Jason Alexander, CEO of Ascension St. Vincent and senior vice president of Ascension. “It became clear that adding Ascension St. Vincent to the network of UAB Health System-owned hospitals — and combining and optimizing our collective strengths — is the solution to ensure our community maintains access to sustainable, high-quality healthcare. Among other benefits, patients will gain access to a larger network of local services through UAB.” According to a settlement document, UAB is expected to pay $450,000 for Ascension's stake in St. Vincent, after which the UAB Health System Authority would become the sole corporate member of St. Vincent Health System. The transaction, pending approval by the Catholic Church, is expected to be finalized and completed by the fall of 2024. This means that UAB will take ownership of the care sites. These include:

  • Birmingham, Blount County, Chilton County, and two hospitals in St. Clair County
  • One Nineteen Complex
  • Trussville Freestanding Emergency Department
  • Imaging Center
  • Other clinics

This transaction also includes the current Ascension St. Vincent:

  • Service
  • facilities
  • Caregivers and allies
  • the provider

“Patients will continue to have access to the health services and providers they trust, and they will ultimately have access to a larger care network,” said UAB Health System CEO Don Bulgarella, who is also CEO of the UAB/Ascension St. Vincent Alliance. “UAB and St. Vincent exist to improve lives, and that purpose will inspire our actions in the coming months and beyond.”

The UAB/Ascension St. Vincent Alliance was launched in 2020 to expand Alabamians’ access to health care.
