‘Unfortunate that Canada chose public path’: Shashi Tharoor slams Trudeau’s accusations against India

Tensions between India and Canada hit an all-time low after the Canadian Prime Minister accused India of involvement in the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Najjar. The allegation sparked a political storm as Canada expelled a top Indian diplomat and declared his involvement in Najjar’s murder. Hours later, India rejected Canada’s allegation and expelled a Canadian diplomat in a tit-for-tat move. A day later, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor criticized the Indian diplomat’s expulsion from Canada. Speaking to ANI, Tharoor said, “It is unfortunate that Canada chose such a public path and jeopardized a really good relationship.” Canada has slammed India with a fresh travel advisory, asking its citizens to exercise “extreme caution”. India gave Canada a taste of its own medicine and issued a travel advisory for Indian nationals in Canada. New Delhi urged its citizens in Canada to “exercise extreme caution” for those planning to travel. However, as tensions between India and Canada escalate, Justin Trudeau has ‘softened’ his tone on India. Trudeau claimed that there were “credible allegations of a possible link between agents of India in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nanjar”. Najjar was a pro-Khalistan terrorist who was shot dead outside a Gurudwara in Surrey, Canada in June 2023.
