Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi's Theory Why 5 Bihar Bridges Collapsed In 9 Days: Why After Polling?

'Why after elections': Union minister's view on why 5 Bihar bridges collapsed in 9 days

Jitan Ram Manjhi said those involved in “wrongdoing” would be punished.

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi sees “conspiracy” in Bihar bridge collapses. Why did the bridges fall down after the Lok Sabha elections? He was surprised while talking to reporters in Gaya.

“Why were such incidents not happening 15 or 30 days ago? Why have bridges started collapsing only after the Lok Sabha elections? Why are they collapsing now? Is there a conspiracy to defame the state government?” said the minister.

Five bridges – in Arria, Siwan, East Champaran, Kishanganj, and Madhubani districts – have collapsed across the state in the last nine days.

An under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar's Madhubani area on Friday. The 75-metre-long bridge was being constructed by the Rural Works Department of the Bihar government from 2021.

The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) minister also said that those involved in “wrongdoing” would be punished.

“The state and central governments are keeping a close eye on such incidents. Any contractors or engineers involved in wrongdoing will be punished,” he said.

Mr. Manjhi also blamed “substandard materials used by contractors” for the incidents: “This is happening because of substandard materials used by contractors. The state government will take action against such contractors. The state authorities are investigating. Also, I request them to investigate the conspiracy angle.

The state government is facing a lot of criticism from the opposition due to repeated bridge collapses. Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday took a jibe at the Nitish Kumar government saying that only 5 bridges have collapsed in just 9 days due to dual power of the double engine government in Bihar.

The Madhubani incident came just a day after another bridge collapsed in Kishanganj district.

The third incident of bridge collapse occurred on June 23 in East Champaran's Ghodasahan block.

On June 22, a bridge over a canal connecting Darawanda and Maharajgunj blocks in Siwan collapsed. Earlier, a Rs 12 crore bridge over Bakra river in Sakti block of Arria district collapsed on June 18.
