Ghaziabad DCP (Rural) Vivek Chandra Yadav said the incident took place when the suspect grabbed a police officer’s service pistol and opened fire on the police team (HT file photo).

Police said the suspect, Mohammad Shuqin, was injured in police firing when he grabbed an officer’s service pistol, took him to a local health center and opened fire on the team.

Ghaziabad Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Vivek Chandra Yadav said Shokin was being taken to a community health center in Modinagar for a medical check-up late on Thursday night when the incident took place. It is not clear why the medical examination was conducted late at night. He is accused of assaulting the girl, which led to his arrest around 4 p.m.

“There, he grabbed the service pistol of one of our sub-inspectors who was with him and tried to run away. During the attempt, he opened fire on the police with the stolen service pistol. The police team also fired back. One bullet hit him. Hit in the leg… He was brought under control and the service pistol was also recovered,” Yadav said.

Yadav added that two criminal cases were registered against him. He has been booked for attempted murder in an earlier case registered for assaulting the girl. Another case of attempting to kill policemen and snatching a pistol was registered.

Yadav said Shokin’s motive for attacking the Class 9 student was not clear.

The senior police officer said that Shukin had advised her father to change the school but the girl’s family did not take his advice against the girl’s admission to a particular school very seriously.

Police said they are yet to determine why Shawkin was against the school, the nature of his relationship with the girl’s family and what motivated him to hurt the girl. “We are waiting for the girl to recover so that she can record her statement,” Yadav said.

Shukin had separated from his wife about three years ago and lived alone in the house next to the deceased. Shukin has a young daughter who lives with her mother.

Police said that additional police force has been deployed to maintain law and order situation in the area as the victim and suspects belong to different communities.
