US vets deploying second aircraft carrier group

The US may deploy a second aircraft carrier near Israel, US defense officials said, adding to the US military effort to deter regional powers from getting involved in the war between Hamas and Israel.

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and its accompanying ships were scheduled months ago to depart for the Middle East this week. Defense officials said they are expected to reach the Middle East in about two weeks.

Defense officials said the USS Gerald R. The Ford and its accompanying ships, some of which have nuclear capability, are expected to arrive later Tuesday. Defense officials said the Pentagon is considering, but has not formally decided, whether Eisenhower will relieve Ford or whether both groups will remain.
