Virat Kohli impressed both experts and fans with his phenomenal innings to lead the Indian cricket team to victory over Australia in their opening match of the Cricket World Cup 2023 in Chennai on Sunday. Kohli scored 85 runs in 116 balls and formed a crucial partnership with KL Rahul to fall short of the 200-run target. However, India’s star batsman was in the news even before he faced a single ball in the match. During the 33rd over of Australia’s innings, the DJ at Chepauk asked the crowd to cheer for Kohli, but the former Indian captain immediately turned and gestured to the DJ to cheer for the fast bowler. “Virat asked us to cheer for Bumrah instead, and the crowd immediately responded by cheering loudly for him,” the DJ said.

With the help of aggressive innings from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, India recovered from the dangerous situation of being three wickets for two runs and defeated Australia by six wickets in its first Cricket World Cup match on Sunday.

Chasing a tricky target of 200, India lost three batsmen within two overs before a 165-run partnership between Kohli (85) and Rahul (97 not out) failed to score.

The victory was confirmed with 52 balls remaining.

Spinner Ravindra Jadeja finished with figures of 3-28 to help bowl out Australia for 199 in 49.3 overs in the 150th ODI between the two cricket giants.

Australia went from 110-2 to 140-7 before Cummins hit his first six of the match, but was out for 15.

Number nine Mitchell Starc added some respectability to the total by scoring 28 runs.
