In January this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk termed India's non-permanent seat in the UNSC as 'ridiculous'.
The United States on Wednesday offered support for reforming UN institutions, including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), said Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesman for the US State Department.
Responding to Tesla CEO Elon Musk's statement about India's lack of a permanent seat in the UNSC, Vedant Patel said, “The President has mentioned this earlier in his remarks at the UN General Assembly. has spoken and the secretary has also pointed to it.”
“We certainly support the reform of the United Nations body, including the Security Council, so that it reflects the 21st century world we live in. I don't have an explanation as to what those steps are, but Sure, we admit, he added, that reform is needed, but I'll leave it at that for now.
Earlier in January this year, Musk had termed India's non-permanent seat in the UNSC as 'ridiculous' and said that nations with excess power did not want to give it up.
“At some point, the UN institutions need to be revised. The problem is that those with too much power don't want to give it up. Despite being the most populous country on earth, India has a permanent seat on the Security Council. Ridiculous not to. Africa should also be a permanent seat IMO,” Tesla's CEO wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
India has long sought a permanent seat in the Security Council to better represent the interests of the developing world. Notably, the country has accelerated its demand after receiving support from the international community.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) originally consists of 15 member states, with five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms. Five permanent members have the power to veto a vote in the council.
BJP's promise of permanent seat in UNSC
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its election manifesto titled “Sankalp Patra” Before the Lok Sabha elections in the country, the country has expressed its determination to get permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council.
The BJP promised that we are committed to getting permanent membership in the UN Security Council to elevate India's position in global decision-making. Sankalp Patra.
