Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court in January 2019. His appointment as an SC judge sparked a controversy as he was directly appointed to the Supreme Court, despite having 33 judges senior to him in age and experience.

He is also related to Supreme Court judge Hans Raj Khanna, who resigned from his judgeship during the Emergency.

Career of Justice Sanjiv Khanna

Born on 14 May 1960, Justice Sanjeev Khanna obtained his law degree from Delhi University.

In 1983, after being admitted to the Bar Council of Delhi as an Advocate, he started his practice in the District Court of Delhi. Later, he approached the Delhi High Court and the Tribunals.

Khanna has practiced in the areas of constitutional law, direct taxation, arbitration and commercial matters, company law, land laws, environmental and pollution laws and medical negligence.

Before becoming a Supreme Court judge, Khanna was a judge in the Delhi High Court for 14 years from 2005.

According to his profile on the Supreme Court website, “He (Khanna) argued several criminal cases in the Delhi High Court as an Additional Public Prosecutor, and on appointment by the court as amicus curiae.” “

In April this year, Justice Khanna had delivered a judgment rejecting a plea to cross-verify votes cast in EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) with VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail).

Justice Khanna was also part of the Supreme Court bench that struck down the constitutionality of the electoral bond scheme.

Kejriwal's guarantee

The Supreme Court bench had said that Kejriwal, arrested in the money laundering case linked to the Delhi Excise Policy scam, will have to surrender on June 2 and go back to jail.

Kejriwal getting interim bail after 40 days is nothing short of a miracle. There is also a divine indication that the current situation of the country is about to change. His release will pave the way for major changes in the country,” AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj had said at a press conference at the party office.

AAP supporters and leaders welcomed the Supreme Court's decision.
