The search for the next head coach of the Indian cricket team is on, as Rahul Dravid's tenure ends after the T20 World Cup 2024. Dravid performed brilliantly and led the Rohit Sharma-led team to the title by defeating South Africa in the final. Gautam Gambhir was the frontrunner for the post, while WV Raman was also in the race, but fans and experts were surprised why Dravid did not re-apply for the post. BCCI secretary Jay Shah revealed the reason behind Dravid's decision and said that the board did not want to 'force' him into the matter.

“He told me that he wanted to resign because of family commitments and we respected his decision. I did not want to force him to give an extension,” Shah told reporters in Barbados.

Shah also praised Dravid's contribution to Indian cricket – first as a cricketer, then as an administrator and head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Shah said, “Rahul Bhai has served Indian cricket for the last five and a half years. He was the director of the National Cricket Academy for three years and then for the last two and a half years, he has been working as the head coach of Team India.”

He said, “Rahul Dravid's role in this T20 World Cup title win is as important as Rohit Sharma's. He is the person who took the team to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and he did not want to leave the team because he wanted to complete his work.”

Shah also confirmed that the new head coach will be appointed in time for India's upcoming series.

“The appointments of both the coach and the selectors will be made soon. The CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and whatever they decide after they reach Mumbai, we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but a new coach will join after the Sri Lanka series,” Shah was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
