Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who appeared for the first round of interviews for the role of Team India's head coach, was asked some tough questions. The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) was all set to ask Gambhir and former Indian women's team coach WV Raman questions about Rahul Dravid stepping down in a few weeks. While Gambhir appeared for the interview virtually, Raman was said to be physically present.
According to RevSportz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)-appointed CAC posed three important questions to both Gambhir and Raman. They were:
1. What are your thoughts about the team's coaching staff?
2. With some ageing players in both batting and bowling departments, how will you handle the phase of change?
3. What are your views on split captaincy, fitness parameters related to workload management and the team's failure to win ICC trophies?
Gambhir's name has been linked for the position even before he submitted his application. His prowess in leading the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 made him the 'ideal candidate' to replace Dravid.
In fact, recently WV Raman also wished Gambhir all the best for the role and said that he wishes the 2011 World Cup winner all the best if he takes up the role.
“I have always considered Gautam Gambhir to be one of the best IPL captains. He has always been intense and strategically sound. His success has come entirely from his own efforts. He is committed to cricket and doesn't try to conform to the expectations of others. If he plays for India, I wish him all the best,” Raman told the portal.
Gambhir has also placed his demands before the CAC, the biggest of which is to have two separate teams for white ball and red ball cricket.
The BCCI is not expected to announce the new head coach until the final stages of the ongoing T20 World Cup in 2024.
