Amid rising cases of Zika infection in India, a 74-year-old man died of Zika infection in Shivamogga, Karnataka. According to reports, the man died on Friday. The elderly man was suffering from Zika infection as well as other ailments. Health and Family Welfare Department officials said that he had gone for treatment of urinary infection and breathing problems, both of which could be the reason that led to his death. However, after testing his blood samples, he was confirmed to have Zika infection. He was admitted to a private hospital in Shivamogga.

According to reports, he returned home after receiving treatment but died on Friday. The district health officer stood by his statement to the media and said that Zika virus infection alone cannot cause his death. He also warned that pregnant women are vulnerable to the spread of Zika infection in the state and it can be serious if they get infected. In other cases, it may not be as serious but for pregnant women, the infection can spread to the foetus.

Apart from the death of this elderly man from Shivamogga, another case has been reported from Sagar in Karnataka. According to the DHO report, the sample has been sent to the NIV unit in Bengaluru and the infection is yet to be confirmed.
