Zika virus infection suspected in man's death in Shivmoga

On July 5, a 74-year-old man died in Shivamogga, which is suspected to be a case of Zika virus infection. However, officials from the Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department believe the death could be due to other health issues.

The man, a resident of Shivmoga, was found infected with the Zika virus on June 21. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city.

District Health Officer Dr. Nataraj told HinduHe said, “The patient died on July 5. At present, we cannot say that her death was due to Zika virus. She had difficulty in breathing and had other health problems related to old age. Usually, Zika virus does not cause death. It is serious to find infection of the virus in pregnant women, as this virus can be dangerous for the fetus.”

Another suspected case of Zika virus infection has been reported in the district. The DHO said samples have been sent to the NIV unit in Bengaluru. “The infection is yet to be confirmed,” he said.
