Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter Zuleika Mandela has died of cancer at the age of 43, a family spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Zulika passed away on the evening of Monday, September 25, surrounded by friends and family,” said a statement shared on her official Instagram account.

She documented her battle with cancer on the account. On August 23, she wrote: “What do I tell my kids? How do I tell them that this time, I can’t live my life as a survivor? How do I tell them that everything will be okay when It’s not? I’m dying… I don’t want to die.”

The Nelson Mandela Foundation also released a statement on Tuesday, saying it “expresses its deepest condolences to the Mandela family on the tragic death of Zuleika Mandela last night.”

“We mourn the loss of mother Winnie and Madiba’s beloved grandson and a friend of the Foundation.”

The foundation described her as “a tireless activist for health care and justice.”

“Her work in raising awareness of cancer prevention and her unwavering commitment to breaking the stigma surrounding the disease will continue to inspire us all,” it said.

His activism also included road safety campaigns after his 13-year-old daughter Zainani was killed in a car accident in 2010.
